Join NowGreat news: Long-shot Democratic candidate Kathy Hochul defeated Republican Jane Corwin in yesterday’s special election in New York’s 26th congressional district. It’s only the fourth time a Democrat has been elected in that district since 1857.
Dan Cantor, the director of the Working Families Party in New York, said:
Tonight’s victory sends the message loud and clear to Washington: ‘Hands off our Medicare.’ Vulnerable Republicans like Scott Brown are smart to move away from the fringe of their party and put an end to the Tea Party’s attempts at right-wing social engineering. Moreover, that tonight’s win for the Democratic-Working Families Party candidate came at the expense of two self-funded millionaires and Karl Rove is all the more powerful a reminder that ordinary people can beat back the wealthy and powerful special interests when they come together in singular purpose. We congratulate Congresswoman Hochul and look forward to working with her to improve the lives of working-class and middle-class families in New York and across the country.
And here’s the New York Times on the election: Democrat Wins G.O.P. Seat; Rebuke Seen to Medicare Plan.
