NEW YORK CITY – More than 90 well-known artists and members of the creative community have joined forces to encourage Sen. Elizabeth Warren to run for president in 2016, forming “Artists for Warren” and releasing an open letter to the Massachusetts senator.
“We, the undersigned artists, are joining hundreds of thousands of Americans who want to passionately urge you to run for President,” the letter reads. “We need someone who stands up for the people—America’s students, mothers, retirees, teachers, minimum-wage workers—instead of for the big banks and corporations. …Senator Warren, we’re ready to show you that you have the support needed to enter this presidential race. We’re ready to fight with you, Senator Warren. Please, run for President.”

The Artists for Warren effort—co-founded by cultural organizers Laura Dawn, chief creative director and founder of ART NOT WAR and the former cultural director for MoveOn.org, and Winnie Wong, a Ready for Warren organizer—is a joint project of Run Warren Run and Ready for Warren. The Run Warren Run movement—a major grassroots campaign to encourage Elizabeth Warren to bring her vision into the presidential contest—is being organized by MoveOn.org Political Action and Democracy for America; members of both groups overwhelming voted to support the draft effort and the groups have hired staff and opened offices in Iowa and New Hampshire. Another group, Ready for Warren, is also working to encourage the senator to run.
“We are thrilled that many of our friends and colleagues in the creative community are voicing their support for Elizabeth Warren and joining the growing movement to encourage Warren to enter the presidential race,” said Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action. “Elizabeth Warren’s tireless advocacy on behalf of middle-class and working Americans and her fearlessness in standing up to big banks and corporate interests has motivated hundreds of thousands of Americans to join this Run Warren Run effort, and having the voices of actors, musicians, and other artists is the latest sign of the growing momentum for a Warren presidential campaign.”
“It’s so great to see artists, actors, and musicians coming out to urge Elizabeth Warren to run for president,” said Erica Sagrans, Ready for Warren Campaign Manager. “These artists inspire us, and they’re making it clear they’re inspired by Elizabeth Warren—her integrity, her authenticity, and her vision for what our country can be. We’re psyched to have them on board.”
“The members of the creative community joining the Run Warren Run campaign will not only bring even more people into this fight, but add the pop culture firepower needed to make clear what having a populist progressive hero like Elizabeth Warren in the 2016 race would mean for our country,” said Charles Chamberlain, Executive Director of Democracy for America.
In January, artists gathered in New York City for the first “Artists for Warren” event to learn more about the Run Warren Run campaign and Ready for Warren and pledge their support. The Run Warren Run campaign works to demonstrate to Warren that her core message—an electrifying call to fix a rigged political and economic system that is failing America’s families—resonates among crucial early primary voters and caucus goers, voters more broadly, and the constituencies whose support she’d need to run a winning campaign.
