MoveOn Applauds President Obama’s New Executive Action: Big Move on Immigration is Welcome Step, Major Organizing Victory

On the heels of President Obama’s announcement of executive action protecting millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation, Anna Galland, Executive Director of MoveOn.org Civic Action, released the following statement:

“With Republican extremists in Congress failing to govern, President Obama has kept his promise to take steps within his power to fix our broken immigration system and keep millions of families together. This move will transform the lives of people who came to America in search of a better life, who contribute to our nation’s economic success, and who have lived in fear of being torn away from their homes and families for far too long.

Today’s action is a testament to both the President’s leadership and to a diverse movement that has been unwilling to take ‘no’ for an answer. This includes the heroic, inspiring organizing of undocumented Americans, who have come forward and shared their stories at great personal risk.

We applaud the President for his bold action, but we know this solution is imperfect, temporary, and limited. It doesn’t provide a pathway to citizenship and many families remain at risk of being ripped apart. Now, more than ever, Congress must pass legislation that puts 11 million aspiring Americans on the road to citizenship and ends senseless deportations without further militarization at our border.

This step bodes well for the coming weeks and months: President Obama should continue to boldly move a progressive agenda forward—not just on immigration, but also on the Keystone XL pipeline, net neutrality, and other crucial issues—and refuse to cave to Republican obstructionism.”
