Lady Gaga Breaks Ties With Target Over Anti-LGBT Donations

This past February, Lady Gaga told Billboard that if Target didn’t make amends for donating money to anti-gay political candidates, she would not release the Target exclusive edition of “Born This Way.”

But Target didn’t comply. And on Wednesday, Lady Gaga officially walked:

“Part of my deal with Target is that they have to start affiliating themselves with LGBT charity groups and begin to reform and make amends for the mistakes they’ve made in the past. Our relationship is hinged upon their reform in the company to support the gay community and to redeem the mistakes they’ve made supporting those groups.”

According to the Huffington Post, in July 2010, Target’s political action committee donated to MN Forward, a PAC that supported conservative, anti-gay rights Minnesota State Rep. Tom Emmer. After Target got called out for its not-so-gay-friendly moves, CEO Gregg Steinhafel promised to keep a closer eye on donations. But shortly thereafter, in December 2010, Target gave $30,000 to more anti-gay rights politicians, including MN Reps. Erik Paulsen and John Kline.

Target just missed out on a deal with one of the world’s most important pop stars. But it’s pretty clear that the giant bull’s-eye of a company doesn’t know or care about what it’s like to be “Born This Way.”

We’re gaga for the Lady all over again…
