Nationwide, activists are organizing more than 300 emergency “Nobody is Above the Law” rallies to take place in the case that Donald Trump interferes with the criminal investigation into his campaign and administration.
The Trump Is Not Above the Law rallies—which will launch should Trump attempt to fire special counsel Robert Mueller or interfere in some other way—have a new urgency in the wake of Monday’s developments in the investigation, including former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos pleading guilty to lying to the FBI about contact with Russian agents during the election, and two top Trump aides—campaign chair and adviser Paul Manafort and associate Richard Gates—being indicted on 11 charges, including conspiracy against the United States.
“These indictments show that the investigation into Russian interference in our election is working—and all the more reason to be concerned that Trump, who has repeatedly criticized, interfered with, and even threatened the investigation, will make a move to fire Mueller or otherwise interfere with his work,” said Anna Galland, executive director of MoveOn.org Civic Action. “Let’s be clear: The chairman of Donald Trump’s campaign has just been charged with conspiracy against the United States. Today’s indictment confirms that there is likely a much larger story to be brought to light. The American people deserve the full truth.”
The majority of Americans—by more than a 2-to-1 margin—supports the Mueller investigation, as do many Republicans and Democrats in Congress. Previously, leading Republicans have called for Mueller’s independence, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and numerous other Republican leaders. Yet some Republicans have been working to undermine Mueller’s credibility in recent weeks.
There is bipartisan legislation in the House and Senate to prevent Trump from abusing the power of his office by firing special counsel Mueller. Activists are calling on every member of Congress to support this legislation.
“Congress must act now to protect this investigation and Special Counsel Robert Mueller,” Galland added. “If they wait, it may be too late. The American public deserves the full truth about any criminal activity by Trump and his team. Every member of Congress must support bipartisan legislation, introduced in both the Senate and House, that would take away Trump’s power to fire Mueller, ensuring an independent investigation continues.
“The closer Robert Mueller gets to the truth, the harder we must work to protect his investigation from Donald Trump, who could try to fire him at any moment. All members of Congress regardless of party must rally around the bipartisan legislation in the House and Senate that will block Trump from firing Mueller — and make sure the special counsel’s investigation can get to the truth,” said Stand Up America President Sean Eldridge, whose membership has already made more than 4,000 calls to Congress today alone.
“Finding the truth is an imperative that Republicans and Democrats alike must embrace,” said Lisa Gilbert, Vice President of Legislative Affairs, Public Citizen. “Congress must proactively affirm that they plan to protect Special Counsel Mueller and the investigation he is spearheading. The bipartisan legislation introduced in the House and Senate to do this should be widely supported, and the American public is owed a complete accounting of the activities that occurred around the 2016 election.”
“The indictments delivered today aren’t the end of Mueller’s investigation to expose the truth about Russian interference in our election, they’re the beginning,” said Marge Baker, Executive Vice President at People For the American Way. “Members of Congress who care about the rule of law should make clear that they won’t allow President Trump to interfere in this investigation—and that means supporting the bipartisan legislation protecting Mueller and his work. This work isn’t about partisan politics or scoring points—it’s about the integrity of our democracy.”
