For 17 years, MoveOn has been making waves across the country, fighting for the progressive values that matter most–even when no one else would. Now we’re looking for superstars to join our team and help us win some huge and exciting fights in 2015 and beyond.

This year we’ll continue running a powerful open platform that empowers our members to fight for the issues that matter most to them, stand in solidarity with Americans across the country in the movement for Black lives, break ground with new organizing strategies and technology, and much more. In short: we’re going big, and we need the best people around to help us do it.

moneysign2Get paid a competitive salary

We offer our staff a solid wage that allows them to pay their bills and provide for their families. You certainly won’t join the 1% while working at MoveOn–but we have a feeling that isn’t your style anyway.

medical Go to the doctor and even the “dreaded” dentist

As an organization that fought tirelessly to support President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, you might expect us to have world-class healthcare benefits for our staff–and we do. We cover full medical and dental care costs for employees and their children, as well as partial coverage for spouses and domestic partners.

MoveOn offers 401(k) retirement benefits, for when you’re done changing the world (for a living, at least).

umbrella2Take a vacation

We want you to take time off! We work hard and fight for important causes, but we also realize the need to take time to recharge. That’s why we offer four weeks of paid vacation per year, 10 sick days, 2 flexible holidays, and 4 all-staff holidays, on top of the flexible schedule that comes with working in a virtual office.

You could say that MoveOn has offices all over America. That’s because MoveOn staff live all across the country. No two people work in the same place. This is not an accident. It started as an experiment in the “virtual office,”and it has proven an important part of our success.

We don’t care where in the country you work; we care about the work you’re doing. We equip you with everything you need for your home office or coworking space, while also empowering you to take time away from the office to find a coffee shop or other location for your work to thrive from.

Being in a virtual office means that we hire the best person for the job, no matter where they live.

We work in service of our members

Since the founding of MoveOn, we’ve taken a different approach to our work. Instead of thinking of the Internet as a new and bigger “soap box” or megaphone for getting out our own opinions, we’ve looked at it as a medium for helping people connect to each other and be effective together. This view–which is different from many other political and advocacy organizations–is basically a service model. Providing service is a humble act that is a core piece of what we do.

We are a team of leaders

We hire wickedly smart, ferociously entrepreneurial, and extraordinarily competent people. We ask our team to step up to bear the responsibility for our success, drive always toward excellence, and celebrate as one team.

We believe in equity

MoveOn is a truly inclusive, diverse, progressive organization. We practice equity internally with our staff and externally with our members and in our campaigns. We seek to practice this core progressive value not just because we honor the dignity and humanity of all people, but because equity is fundamental to building a strong movement and achieving breakthrough progressive power rooted in the history of social justice movements. We’re proud to be multiracial, gender inclusive and cross-class, representing people of all ages, religions, abilities, and sexual and gender identities.

We go bold

We’ve been going bold since our inception, and now we are preparing to go bolder than ever. In the ever-changing world of online organizing, we want to continue to be the leader that we have always been. Whether it’s launching a million-dollar campaign to draft Senator Elizabeth Warren into the presidential election or advancing another blockbuster idea that we’re waiting on you to lead, we’re ready to take it on and continue to shape the progressive space as we know it.

Career Opportunities

Contract Opportunity – Racial Justice Campaign Position

Compensation: $75 per hour for up to 20 hours per week

Term: 4 months

Background Information

The epidemic of young people of color killed by police violence is a national crisis. Local police are increasingly militarized. Across the board, Black and Brown people are stopped, arrested, charged, incarcerated, and brutalized at higher rates than their white counterparts. And, across the country, communities are taking to the streets to demand change and reform. As the Movement for Black Lives continues to grow, hundreds of thousands of people—from Ferguson to Baltimore to Oakland—are mobilizing for racial justice.

Specifically, many are calling for reforms to our criminal justice system—which has a disproportionately negative impact on people of color—and other reforms that can seriously challenge systemic racism and exclusion in our democracy. Right now, as national attention is focused on this crisis, it’s crucial that progressive organizations are making meaningful contributions to the movement for change.

Contract Posting

Contract Opportunity – Racial Justice Campaign Position

Compensation: $75 per hour for up to 20 hours per week

Term: 4 months, through October 2015

Background Information

The epidemic of young people of color killed by police violence is a national crisis. Local police are increasingly militarized. Across the board, Black and Brown people are stopped, arrested, charged, incarcerated, and brutalized at higher rates than their white counterparts. And, across the country, communities are taking to the streets to demand change and reform. As the Movement for Black Lives continues to grow, hundreds of thousands of people—from Ferguson to Baltimore to Oakland—are mobilizing for racial justice.

Specifically, many are calling for reforms to our criminal justice system—which has a disproportionately negative impact on people of color. Right now, as national attention is focused on this crisis, it’s crucial that progressive organizations are making meaningful contributions to the movement for change.

As one of the largest, national, progressive organizations in the country, MoveOn is committed to supporting and amplifying action that fosters major reforms to our criminal justice system and changes the relationship between police and communities they’re supposed to serve—especially Black and Brown youth.

In this position, you’ll be a resource for MoveOn’s campaign team as we work with allied organizations, MoveOn members, and local leaders to drive campaigns that will change criminal justice policies across the country. You’ll also identify new campaigning opportunities by following the leadership of MoveOn members through our petition platform, where many have added their names to calls for justice—including 600,000 who took action after the tragic murder of Trayvon Martin and the hundreds of thousands more who have joined campaigns in the last year.

Following the lead of members may also take us out of the realm of criminal justice reform and into other areas that can challenge systemic racism and exclusion in our democracy—as was the case with a MoveOn member’s 570,000-person petition to bring down the Confederate flag in South Carolina. You’ll be charged with finding the right balance between emergent member energy and other strategic interventions.

This contract opportunity is not a siloed position at MoveOn. We’ve historically hired full-time campaigners who can work across a range of issues—and that hasn’t changed. But in this critical moment for our country, we’re looking for a top notch strategist and organizer who can lead in deepening MoveOn’s engagement in racial justice campaigning and help our diverse, multi-million person membership take action by exploring the intersections of racial justice, economic justice, corporate accountability and MoveOn’s other broad areas of work.

This position will work closely with MoveOn’s campaigns, communication, and petition platform staff as needed, and we expect the work you perform in this position to make a lasting difference in the way we approach racial justice campaigning.

Contract Deliverables

  • Identify and research at least 5 opportunities per month where MoveOn and its members should engage in the fight for reform and justice on a local and national scale;
  • In rapid response moments, draft written recommendations and participate in conference call strategy sessions to help MoveOn determine which political and tactical strategies to implement; and
  • Draft and edit email and social media content which MoveOn may use to quickly escalate campaigns across the country
  • Produce images, compelling action alerts, and emails that help to educate and connect the dots between police violence, mass incarceration, and other progressive issues

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead strategy development and run campaigns—everything from creating a campaign plan to quickly researching policy solutions and demands to working with local leaders and media—that amplify and support the growing movement for Black lives and criminal justice reform
  • Identify and research campaign opportunities to engage MoveOn members in the fight for reform and justice on a local and national scale, and help local fights to a national stage.
  • Support communities in rapid-response moments and quickly escalating situations in cities across the country, working with MoveOn members and other community leaders in cities like Ferguson, Cleveland, and Baltimore that have become flash points for the movement for police and criminal justice reform.
  • Develop the basis and plans for longer-term campaigns that sustain momentum and secure structural reforms and victories.
  • Nurture and grow relationships with partner organizations and local community organizations to guide MoveOn’s involvement and amplify the work grassroots leaders are driving in cities across the country.
  • Work with MoveOn’s campaigns team to quickly produce images, compelling action alerts, emails that help to educate and connect the dots between police violence and other progressive issues, and support grassroots action happening in communities across the country.

Position Background:

Our country faces monumental challenges: the most severe economic inequality since the Great Depression, a massive flood of money corrupting our democracy, persistent racism, permanent war, a global climate crisis, and more. But our country’s future is also ripe with opportunity for profound progressive change—if our movement can rise to the moment.

In our first 17 years, MoveOn’s small staff and millions of members have pioneered a model of building and wielding independent progressive power through campaigns that combine mass mobilization, cutting-edge technology, and sharp strategic and political analysis. As a member-driven organization, we’ve changed how politics works, won remarkable victories from Capitol Hill to state legislatures and city halls around the country, and helped grow and amplify mass movements for political and cultural change. Whether stoking the movement against the war in Iraq, launching the fight for Net Neutrality, winning health care reform, or helping elect and elevate progressives like Senator Elizabeth Warren, MoveOn has repeatedly been in the thick of—and even defined—America’s biggest progressive fights.
