Want to empower millions of Americans to stand up for the progressive values that matter most?
For 17 years, MoveOn has been making waves across the country, fighting for the progressive values that matter most–even when no one else would. Now we’re looking for superstars to join our team and help us win some huge and exciting fights in 2016 and beyond.
This year we’ll continue running a powerful open platform that empowers our members to fight for the issues that matter most to them, stand in solidarity with Americans across the country in the movement for Black lives, break ground with new organizing strategies and technology, and much more. In short: we’re going big, and we need the best people around to help us do it.
Get paid a competitive salary
We offer our staff a solid wage that allows them to pay their bills and provide for their families. You certainly won’t join the 1% while working at MoveOn–but we have a feeling that isn’t your style anyway.
Go to the doctor and even the “dreaded” dentist
As an organization that fought tirelessly to support President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, you might expect us to have world-class healthcare benefits for our staff–and we do. We cover full medical, dental and vision care costs for employees and their children, as well as partial coverage for spouses and domestic partners.
Save for retirement
MoveOn offers 401(k) retirement benefits, for when you’re done changing the world (for a living, at least).
Take a vacation
We want you to take time off! We work hard and fight for important causes, but we also realize the need to take time to recharge. That’s why we offer four weeks of paid vacation per year, 10 sick days, 6 flexible holidays, and 4 all-staff holidays, on top of the flexible schedule that comes with working in a virtual office.
Have a family
As a vocal supporter of paid family leave MoveOn recognizes the importance of family bonding and offers generous paid time off for mothers and fathers as their families expand. We want you take the time you need to be a parent and offer 12 weeks paid full-time off.
You could say that MoveOn has offices all over America. That’s because MoveOn staff live all across the country. No two people work in the same place. This is not an accident. It started as an experiment in the “virtual office,”and it has proven an important part of our success.
We don’t care where in the country you work; we care about the work you’re doing. We equip you with everything you need for your home office or coworking space, while also empowering you to take time away from the office to find a coffee shop or other location for your work to thrive from.
Being in a virtual office means that we hire the best person for the job, no matter where they live.
We work in service of our members
Since the founding of MoveOn, we’ve taken a different approach to our work. Instead of thinking of the Internet as a new and bigger “soap box” or megaphone for getting out our own opinions, we’ve looked at it as a medium for helping people connect to each other and be effective together. This view–which is different from many other political and advocacy organizations–is basically a service model. Providing service is a humble act that is a core piece of what we do.
We are a team of leaders
We hire wickedly smart, ferociously entrepreneurial, and extraordinarily competent people. We ask our team to step up to bear the responsibility for our success, drive always toward excellence, and celebrate as one team.
We believe in equity
MoveOn is a truly inclusive, diverse, progressive organization. We practice equity internally with our staff and externally with our members and in our campaigns. We seek to practice this core progressive value not just because we honor the dignity and humanity of all people, but because equity is fundamental to building a strong movement and achieving breakthrough progressive power rooted in the history of social justice movements. We’re proud to be multiracial, gender inclusive and cross-class, representing people of all ages, religions, abilities, and sexual and gender identities.
We go bold
We’ve been going bold since our inception, and now we are preparing to go bolder than ever. In the ever-changing world of online organizing, we want to continue to be the leader that we have always been. Whether it’s launching a million-dollar campaign to draft Senator Elizabeth Warren into the presidential election or advancing another blockbuster idea that we’re waiting on you to lead, we’re ready to take it on and continue to shape the progressive space as we know it.

MoveOn.org is a community of 8 million members working together to create progressive change in America. We take on campaigns to challenge entrenched power and push back against right-wing policies, while pursuing economic, racial, and social justice.
Recent campaigns have included successfully defending a breakthrough diplomatic agreement with Iran, forcing South Carolina to take down the Confederate flag over the state capitol, defending Planned Parenthood, and running “Run Warren Run,” a highly visible campaign encouraging Elizabeth Warren to run for president, helping make economic populism a leading issue in the 2016 election. We’ve also worked to combat climate change, defend civil liberties, push for a more just economic system, and more.
With the heightened political energy of the election year ahead, 2016 promises to be a year of fierce fights and big opportunities.
MoveOn.org’s campaign directors are high-level operatives who develop and execute high-impact and game-changing campaigns that empower MoveOn members to achieve concrete victories and further a progressive agenda. We are looking for experienced, passionate, inventive, collaborative colleagues to expand the team.
Responsibilities: Execute excellent, high-profile, high-impact campaigns.
You will proactively and aggressively find, develop, lead, and contribute to campaigns that tap member energy, boast credible theories of change, and have national impact. You’ll be involved in every step of the process, from drafting plans to executing them. You’ll be involved in listening to members to determine what their priorities are, running a range of online and real-world actions, and sharing a comprehensive, transparent strategy with your colleagues.
You will write, write, write. You will write compelling, well-documented emails that motivate members to take a range of actions. You will write thorough campaign plans that include strategies for engaging and empowering members, working constructively with allies, making effective use of MoveOn staff and resources, and accomplishing concrete, ambitious goals. You will write reportbacks about your work on a regular basis to communicate with members, partners, media, and your colleagues.
You will show your leadership in managing relationships with colleagues in a collaborative setting, managing the MoveOn member experience, and managing resources that help get the job done. You’ll assess needs for technical and creative support, and you’ll work directly with contractors and consultants. And you will build relationships with allies across the progressive movement and beyond to expand the reach of your campaigns.
You will learn and utilize the full range of MoveOn tools—including, but not limited to, our email system, petitions, call alerts, event platform, and database—and keep learning as new tools come into existence or as you devise new tactics yourself.
You will be a member of a dynamic, committed, opinionated team, where you will nimbly move among campaigns, support the work of your colleagues, and lean on others for help as well. You will offer top-line and in-line feedback on colleagues’ campaign plans, emails, and other drafts, and you’ll pitch in to help our small team accomplish great things.
You will bring your own experience, relationships, and areas of focus into the mix to help devise and drive campaigns, while taking on new areas outside of your expertise and bringing them into your portfolio.
Required skills and experience:
Experience leading campaigns that mobilize people, promote progressive values, and make change in the world
Strong writing skills for a popular audience
Commitment to listening to and empowering members
Nimbleness—to move among campaigns, tasks, and strategies
Self-directedness—MoveOn is a virtual office, and while you will interact with your colleagues constantly, you will be driving your own workflow and output.
Attention to detail
The ability to engage with constructive feedback from colleagues and participate in honest staff dialogue
Comfort in learning the suite of MoveOn technology tools—You will learn to code your own emails, launch your own petitions, and work deeply in queries within our database.
Team spirit—We punch above our weight. To have the impact we do with a relatively small team requires people working together, trusting each other, communicating honestly, and pitching in on all major projects, as well as on tasks large and small.
