Come be a part of the MoveOn team!
Why MoveOn | MoveOn Benefits | Our Offices | The MoveOn Way MoveOn Careers

For 17 years, MoveOn has been making waves across the country, fighting for the progressive values that matter most–even when no one else would. Now we’re looking for superstars to join our team and help us win some huge and exciting fights in 2016 and beyond.

This year we’ll continue running a powerful open platform that empowers our members to fight for the issues that matter most to them, stand in solidarity with Americans across the country in the movement for Black lives, break ground with new organizing strategies and technology, and much more. In short: we’re going big, and we need the best people around to help us do it.

moneysign2Get paid a competitive salary

We offer our staff a solid wage that allows them to pay their bills and provide for their families. You certainly won’t join the 1% while working at MoveOn–but we have a feeling that isn’t your style anyway.

medical Go to the doctor and even the “dreaded” dentist

As an organization that fought tirelessly to support President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, you might expect us to have world-class healthcare benefits for our staff–and we do. We cover full medical, dental and vision care costs for employees and their children, as well as partial coverage for spouses and domestic partners.

401k Save for retirement

MoveOn offers 401(k) retirement benefits, for when you’re done changing the world (for a living, at least).

umbrella2Take a vacation

We want you to take time off! We work hard and fight for important causes, but we also realize the need to take time to recharge. That’s why we offer four weeks of paid vacation per year, 10 sick days, 6 flexible holidays, and 4 all-staff holidays, on top of the flexible schedule that comes with working in a virtual office.

babyHave a family

As a vocal supporter of paid family leave MoveOn recognizes the importance of family bonding and offers generous paid time off for mothers and fathers as their families expand. We want you take the time you need to be a parent and offer 12 weeks paid full-time off.

We want our staff to be happy and healthy. We provide all our staff with paid health and wellness benefits and encourage them to take time away from their desks to stay healthy.

You could say that MoveOn has offices all over America. That’s because MoveOn staff live all across the country. No two people work in the same place. This is not an accident. It started as an experiment in the “virtual office,”and it has proven an important part of our success.

We don’t care where in the country you work; we care about the work you’re doing. We equip you with everything you need for your home office or coworking space, while also empowering you to take time away from the office to find a coffee shop or other location for your work to thrive from.

Being in a virtual office means that we hire the best person for the job, no matter where they live.

We work in service of our members

Since the founding of MoveOn, we’ve taken a different approach to our work. Instead of thinking of the Internet as a new and bigger “soap box” or megaphone for getting out our own opinions, we’ve looked at it as a medium for helping people connect to each other and be effective together. This view–which is different from many other political and advocacy organizations–is basically a service model. Providing service is a humble act that is a core piece of what we do.

We are a team of leaders

We hire wickedly smart, ferociously entrepreneurial, and extraordinarily competent people. We ask our team to step up to bear the responsibility for our success, drive always toward excellence, and celebrate as one team.

We believe in equity

MoveOn is a truly inclusive, diverse, progressive organization. We practice equity internally with our staff and externally with our members and in our campaigns. We seek to practice this core progressive value not just because we honor the dignity and humanity of all people, but because equity is fundamental to building a strong movement and achieving breakthrough progressive power rooted in the history of social justice movements. We’re proud to be multiracial, gender inclusive and cross-class, representing people of all ages, religions, abilities, and sexual and gender identities.

We go bold

We’ve been going bold since our inception, and now we are preparing to go bolder than ever. In the ever-changing world of online organizing, we want to continue to be the leader that we have always been. Whether it’s launching a million-dollar campaign to draft Senator Elizabeth Warren into the presidential election or advancing another blockbuster idea that we’re waiting on you to lead, we’re ready to take it on and continue to shape the progressive space as we know it.

The Video Editor & Producer will edit quick-turnaround videos advancing these goals.

ABOUT THE MOVEON VIDEO LAB

The MoveOn Video Lab team will frequently and rapidly produce timely and compelling sharable videos that reach large and diverse audiences, with an emphasis on Facebook-native video that leverages the power of the more than 800,000 MoveOn members who follow our Facebook page and who are eager to share quality content.

The video team will lean into and build on the success of existing MoveOn video projects including our partnerships with Robert Reich and Heather McGhee and our O’Keefe Brief series—and will learn from and adapt the high-volume, relevant-to-the-news-cycle approach being pioneered by media outlets including AJ+, NowThis, BuzzFeed, Vox, and others: short, timely videos that use stock footage, photos, and graphics, and onscreen text, and usually do not require video shoots. You’ll place a premium on experimentation and innovation, working in 2-week to 4-week sprints to test and innovate different approaches, developing and building on existing templates that we know perform well on Facebook, and relying on the expertise of our analytics team to work alongside the video team to identify what’s working and what’s not.

Our goal will be to create compelling videos that share widely and help MoveOn accomplish our 2016 election goals and advance our priority campaigns, that spread progressive values and ideas, and that build a more powerful brand for MoveOn members. We will launch the Video Lab as a temporary project that runs through the election, but if we succeed in building a model that has substantial impact and identify sustainable funding opportunities, we will be eager to extend and continue building the project after the election.

ABOUT MOVEON

MoveOn.org is a community of millions of members working together to create progressive change in America. We take on campaigns to challenge entrenched power and push back against corporate and 1% influence in our nation’s politics, while pursuing economic, racial, and social justice.

Recent campaigns have included successfully helping to defend the Syrian refugee program and the breakthrough diplomatic agreement with Iran; helping take the Confederate battle flag off of the South Carolina capitol grounds and the shelves of major retailers; defending Planned Parenthood; and working to build progressive power within the Democratic Party and our country via the presidential election, with our 2015 “Run Warren Run” campaign encouraging Elizabeth Warren to run for president and then MoveOn members’ endorsement and support of Bernie Sanders this winter and spring. We’ve also worked to combat climate change, defend civil liberties, push for racial justice and a more just economic system, and more.

With the heightened political energy of the election, 2016 promises to be a year of fierce fights and big opportunities. National Field Director

Full Time • Starts ASAP • Competitive Pay • Excellent Benefits • Work from Anywhere in the US

MoveOn.org is a community of millions of members working together to create progressive change in America. We take on campaigns to challenge entrenched power and push back against right-wing policies, while pursuing economic, racial, and social justice.

With the heightened political energy of the election year, 2016 is a year of fierce fights and big opportunities. We’re fully committed to not only stopping a Trump presidency, but resoundingly rejecting Trump’s hate as illegitimate and unacceptable in every corner of our society by showing the resilience and power of our communities.

We demonstrate our resilience and power by fighting for–and winning–campaigns for common-sense progressive change. MoveOn members have helped win $15 an hour minimum wage in cities across the country alongside the Fight for $15; we led the charge to prevent war with Iran and demonstrate that diplomacy works. We’re fighting for a fossil-fuel free economy, an end to mass incarceration, to reclaim our democracy from the grip of corporate power and much more.

And, over the last decade, MoveOn has been at the forefront of a revolution in online organizing that has reshaped the landscape from a small number of staff campaigners launching digital campaigns to a huge number of everyday people waging and winning people-powered campaigns and joining together for national action.

As the National Field Director, you’ll build the new MoveOn Field Network that reflects today’s technology, momentum, scale–and the huge talents and appetites of MoveOn’s millions of members in every corner of the country. In 2016, you’ll lead a mass mobilization program to stop Trump’s hate while building the leadership of grassroots activists to lead the fights we’ll need to win over the long-term. You love that moment when a volunteer coaches another volunteer to take on new leadership, you are hungry to build things to scale, you know the power of people united in strategic action, and you’re ready be at the helm of the next generation of MoveOn’s national scaled, people-powered organizing network.

Requirements: There are three critical skill sets necessary to excel in this role: Organizing, Communications, and Technology. Strong candidates will be skilled in all three areas. Strong organizing and communications skills are a must. If you have less deep expertise in technology, you are still encouraged to apply, so long as you have the hunger and aptitude to learn quickly.

Organizing

  • Above all else, you’re an organizer at heart. You love leadership development, member-led campaigns, and training. The best part of your day is when you get a chance to talk to a member leader.
  • You geek out talking about and thinking about scaled, innovative field models.
  • You’re a field architect with innovative and new ideas for how to build a scaled  field network. You have the skills to bridge tried-and-true organizing models with innovative technology platforms.
  • You’re politically savvy and think about how people power could change the direction of decisions at the local, state, and national level.
  • You understand, trust, and connect with grassroots activists and want to support them in doing impactful, creative work.
  • You’re creative and skilled at thinking about how to combine community organizing best practices with scalable tech tools. You’re constantly thinking of creative new ways to mobilize people and have an impact.
  • You have a track record of winning high-impact advocacy campaigns.
  • You have extensive experience managing project teams of staff and large numbers of volunteers. You’re a coach as much as you are a manager.
  • You have the experience of or equivalent to a Field Director for an issue advocacy campaign, national campaign, congressional race, or other campaign where you set strategic direction, hired, coached, and managed organizers, and drove campaigns to win and build power.

Communications

  • You are a powerful writer for popular audiences, especially short and grabby email actions
  • You are a persuasive, well-spoken, and inspiring organizer–on one-to-one’s or large conference calls.
  • You have an eye for campaigns that are newsworthy.
  • You’re able to quickly synthesize and analyze information about breaking news in a fast-paced environment.

Technology

  • You have an eye for leveraging technology to help more people take more action for positive progressive change–like calling tools, canvassing apps, and event recruitment tools that excite and attract users.
  • You can work with our tech team to identify what projects to prioritize and de-prioritize.
  • You are comfortable with, or excited to learn, the suite of tools MoveOn uses–including ActionKit, SQL, SMS platforms, social media. Maybe you’ve got tech ideas to add to our existing toolset!

Work Environment

  • You like teamwork, but can work independently day-to-day.
  • You can plan and manage complex projects under relentless deadlines.
  • You are low-ego and high-output (like the rest of our team).
  • You can change directions quickly and frequently: “build it, test it, iterate quickly”
  • You like working hard with a hard-working team.
  • You thrive in a virtual office: communicates well on conference calls, Slack and email.

Location: Position may be based anywhere in the United States.

Classification, Salary, and Benefits: Full-time, competitive salary including benefits such as 100%-employer-paid premiums for medical, dental, and vision insurance for all staff and their children; employer-paid premiums for life insurance for all staff; four weeks accrued paid vacation time per year; 12 weeks of paid maternity or paternity leave in connection with the birth, adoption or foster of a child; 10 days accrued paid sick time; and reimbursement of home office expenses.

About MoveOn

MoveOn.org—the preeminent people-powered progressive campaigning organization that has, time and again, deployed innovative uses of data and technology in service of making social change—is hiring a new Senior Data Analyst. Is this you?

Since 1998, MoveOn.org has been at the leading edge of figuring out how to leverage data, technology, and scale to organize and empower millions of everyday Americans to make a difference in the big fights of our time—combating economic inequality, opposing unjust wars, pushing for action on the climate crisis, and more.

Throughout its history, MoveOn has championed a culture of analytics and analytic innovation—from the kinds of digital A/B testing and optimization now made famous by presidential campaigns to deep member listening through data. In recent years, MoveOn has incubated Upworthy.com (formerly MoveOn Media) to use a data-driven approach to find and spread powerful and compelling progressive content, developed predictive models to better understand members and guide strategic decisions, and integrated 17 years of historical data into a cloud-based data warehouse, making even more and more advanced analytics possible.

In the coming years, our members will wage campaigns to push back against the radical right and the corrupting influence of big money in our democracy. We’ll build independent progressive political power through the 2016 elections. And we’ll pioneer the next generation of people-powered organizing.

Is this job for you?

  • Are you a highly skilled, entrepreneurial data analyst who encounters everyday problems and sees them as fun or interesting data challenges?
  • Are you a thoughtful and effective communicator, who can both talk to a technical audience and partner with a nontechnical audience?
  • Are you a practical problem solver who understands how to incorporate data in decision making to help drive clear, strategic decisions?
  • Do you believe in the potential of analytics to empower and help win campaigns for social justice?

Skills required:

Our next Senior Data Analyst should be a gifted data analyst who can communicate effectively across the organization and apply strategic and analytic judgement. The role requires the following:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. You’ll be working with people from teams across the organization. They don’t want a data dump. They want collaboration and strategic guidance.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills. The core of this role is to translate real-world challenges into analytic problems, solve them, and translate them back into real-world solutions. You should love the thought of doing that.
  • Good judgment and vision. The organization counts on its analytics team to provide sound decision-making advice. You should feel comfortable doing that, even with imperfect knowledge, and should have the vision to anticipate the analytics questions we’ll be asking six months from now.
  • Supervisory experience. Is a bonus.
  • Experience with databases and lots of data. We use postgreSQL and Amazon Redshift as well as MySQL databases. Experience with other setups is fine too. Experience with digital analytics or analytics in an advocacy or electoral campaign is also a plus, but not required.
  • A strong understanding of modern data science. Our problems frequently change, so a broad knowledge base of analytic approaches and the ability to learn quickly are key. We do most of our analysis in R with scripts as needed, but any solid stats/analytics platform experience will work.
  • A passion for social justice. You should do this job because you’re passionate about making the country more progressive through grassroots activism.
  • A warm, caring, earnest nature and good sense of humor. You’d fit in well at MoveOn with those.
