MoveOn statement on House #NoBillNoBreak sit-in

Ilya Sheyman, executive director of MoveOn.org Political Action, responded to the historic sit-in staged by House Democrats today to urge a vote on common-sense gun control measures:

“MoveOn members agree with House Democrats: This is absolutely not the time for business as usual. The only way to honor the victims and families of the Orlando massacre is to make such tragedies less likely in the future. Congress must not adjourn for the July 4 recess until it passes meaningful and effective gun violence prevention legislation.

“We demand a vote on an assault weapons ban, funding for CDC research into gun violence, and universal background checks. Those are three ideas, with near universal public support, that don’t feed into the racism, Islamophobia, and authoritarianism of the constitutionally suspect terror-gap provision.”

In the last two weeks, nearly 600,000 MoveOn members have signed a petition calling for a ban on assault weapons and, on Monday, as the Senate prepared to vote on Sen. Chris Murphy’s background check legislation, MoveOn members made more than 15,000 calls in support of that legislation.
