MoveOn Statement on Iraq Airstrikes, Humanitarian Aid

Statement from Anna Galland, executive director of MoveOn.org Civic Action, in response to military airstrikes in Iraq today:

News that the United States has once again used military force in Iraq, by launching airstrikes, is deeply disturbing—the risks of mission creep, unintended consequences, and incremental escalation are real and dangerous. After a decade of conflict, the U.S. cannot afford another Iraq war, and U.S. military force is not the solution.

It’s important to note that the United States is also providing humanitarian aid in this crisis. Like all Americans, MoveOn members welcome President Obama’s swift decision to provide this aid to the tens of thousands of innocent men, women, and children who have been trapped by this dangerous conflict.

The civil war in Iraq can only be resolved, and peace and stability can only be achieved, through an Iraqi-led political solution. As President Obama has said before, there is no viable military solution to this crisis.
