MoveOn members and allies urge congress to introduce the Senate bill and file a discharge petition for comprehensive immigration reform

Comprehensive immigration reform is currently stalled in Congress, MoveOn members join America’s Voice, 18MillionRising, We Belong Together, CREDO Action, and MomsRising.org in urging congress to introduce the  bipartisan Senate bill and push for a discharge petition to pass comprehensive immigration reform this fall, after the August recess.

Dear members of Congress,

On behalf of MoveOn.org, America’s Voice, 18Million Rising, We Belong Together, and CREDO Action, we are writing to respectfully urge you to introduce the Senate immigration bill without the harmful Corker-Hoeven amendment in the House, and to request your support for a discharge petition that would lead to an up-or-down vote on this important bill.

We are committed to mobilizing our combined 15 million members in support of a discharge petition on comprehensive immigration reform—including a clear roadmap to citizenship for nearly 11 million Americans—in the lead up to and throughout the August recess to ensure that this effort has broadest base of public support possible.

Unlike the bipartisan fighting that woefully killed immigration reform in 2007, we now have a bill that passed the Senate with remarkable bipartisan support and we can’t afford to let opposition from political extremists prevent this commonsense measure from becoming law this year.

We know that introducing a bill and supporting a discharge petition is not something to be taken lightly, but nothing is more important right now in the effort to improve the lives of millions of people—or as essential to preserving our Democracy—as supporting a bipartisan effort to fix our broken immigration system. Most Americans agree that we need to fix our broken system now. Immigration reform is an important issue for our time and would help bring nearly 11 million aspiring Americans out of the shadows.

As an elected official who has the honor and privilege of serving in the U.S. Congress representing the people of your district, our members ask that you put politics aside and do what is right for our country at a watershed moment in our history. Take the lead in introducing a comprehensive immigration reform bill in the House and support a discharge petition to ensure it gets a vote on the floor.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Respectfully,

–MoveOn.org, America’s Voice, 18MillionRising, We Belong Together, CREDO Action, and MomsRising.org
